Public Safety How many times have you heard on the news that a child had been attacked, or—sadly—even killed by a chained dog or one who had broken free from a chain? Dogs are very social animals and when kept in a very confined area without exercise or mental stimulation, they can develop destructive behaviors including being very protective of their territory. Enter a child, and you have a catastrophe. Public Nuisance Barking, yelping, unsightly doghouses and stench. How would you like to live near that? Irresponsible Pet Ownership Owning a pet is an ongoing responsibility and a commitment to that animal for life. It is not an entitlement and we believe if you have to chain a dog, you shouldn’t have one. Cruelty Simply put, dogs that are chained are neglected physically and emotionally. Sure they may be fed once a day, if lucky, but they need so much more care and attention. They often become infested with worms because they eat and sleep in their own feces and drink stagnant water. They get entangled in their chain and may even hang themselves. Collars may become embedded—imagine the pain. Their houses are often inadequate to keep them warm in the winter or cool in the summer. Being chained, they are at the mercy of other dogs and wild animals. Dog fighting Dogs have a flight or fight instinct. A chained dog cannot flee, so it fights.
